Morton’s neuroma, or metatarsalgia, is caused by inflamation of the nerves leading to the toes. The condition results in foot pain, discomfort and a burning sensation or numbness of the toes. Similar to plantar fasciitis, Morton’s neuroma can result from athletics or any activity that places prolonged and acute pressure on the foot. Tight and uncomfortable footwear (ex. flip flops and high heels) are common causes of Morton’s neuroma.
Acupuncture is an effective way to treat the condition. Treatment can both reduce the size of the neuromas as well as the resulting pain or discomfort. Acupuncture reduces inflammation and increases circulation to the foot, addressing the main symptoms of this condition. Acupuncture also bolsters the body’s healing mechanisms, allowing for a shorter recovery time. Physical therapy, specialized footwear and corticosteroid injections are also used to treat Morton’s neuroma.
Its extremely important to treat this condition before it worsens. In serious cases, surgery must be performed to remove the neuroma.
