How Does Acupuncture Treat Diabetes?

Glucose intolerance, or diabetes, is a disease that disrupts the stability of the body’s insulin levels.  Those diagnosed with diabetes can suffer from blood vessel and nerve damage or stroke as a result of post-meal blood sugar spikes.  There have been great advancements in the ease of use of diabetes medications, but the method of treatment (insulin injections) has still largely remained the same.  However, there is an alternative to treating diabetes, a method that predates all modern medication for the condition: acupuncture.

Lab studies have shown that acupuncture dramatically enhances insulin efficiency and reduces blood sugar levels, helping with weight loss and pancreatic damage.  Further clinical studies have shown blood sugar levels decreasing and even stabilizing within two hours of treatment.  Acupuncture treats diabetes by stimulating the pancreas to release natural insulin and reduce hormones called glucagons which increase blood pressure level and cause glucose spikes.

Finally, at Princeton Monroe Acupuncture, I encourage all my patients to live a healthy lifestyle in order to facilitate healing and prevent the need for future treatments.  Exercising and eating low glycemic index foods is especially important for diabetic patients.

If you or a loved one is searching for a more natural treatment for diabetes, regular acupuncture visits can be a great alternative or supplement to typical diabetes medications.
